A Cancer Research Fundraising Day at Beacon Cricket Club has successfully raised £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Beacon Cricket Club came together to arrange the recent Fundraising Day after the news that a long-term club member and ex-selector had received a cancer diagnosis.
Club members rallied to organise a range of fundraising activities that saw second team captain David Dowling take ‘Brave the Shave’ to new heights. Not satisfied with clean shaving his head, the club enlisted the help of beauty therapist Sharna Ward who also organised a full body waxing!

With the fundraising total rising, Simon Tripconey (player) and Darren Proctor (player and chairman) joined the effort, offering to go under the wax strips ahead of the event which saw the total rise to well over the initial target of £1,000 before the Fundraising Day took place on Saturday 5 September.
Further fundraising was achieved through a raffle and auction that saw a tremendous level of generosity from club sponsors and members of the community. Prizes included a signed Cornish Pirates shirt and ball, sports massages (MJH and KBT Sports Massage), cases of beer (Keltek Brewery), florist vouchers (Stems Florists), a fitness bootcamp (FAST Fitness and Strength) and even a new handmade cricket bat (JH Cricket).
The Fundraising Day coincided with Beacon’s final home league game of the season against Stithians. Beacon players were auctioned at the start of play, with 50% of the proceeds donated to Cancer Research and the remaining 50% being won by the person who successfully backed the player of the match, elected by scorers after the game.
Beacon donated 25% of bar takings throughout the event, players purchased and played in pink caps in aid of the charity and kept themselves going along with supporters through a takeaway charity bake sale, courtesy of Maria Thomas and BBQ with meat supplied by Bristol Meat Machine.

As part of the event Beacon also unveiled a commemorative mural complete with ‘Stack Plaques’, that are still available and have been purchased by members and supporters to remember loved ones and on-field achievements.
Committee member and player Daniel Mellor led the organisation of the event and commented: “The response from our members, players, sponsors and the local community has been overwhelming and we can’t thank them enough.
“I’d like to extend my personal thanks to everyone who attended, donated and were exemplary in following our social distancing measures.
“A special thanks must go to the Beacon Inn who made a significant donation through the Beacon Community Fund and Stithians Cricket Club for supporting all of our fundraising activity.
“The efforts and contributions from everyone who made this day possible is evidence of the real sense of community we have around the cricket club and I’m so proud to be part of this amazing group of people”.
